The Main Technology Trends for 2019

January 10, 2019

Discover the main technology trends for 2019.

The past year was full of major technological developments, especially with the adoption of cloud technology and many companies using blockchain for multiple purposes. 2019 will be the year in which some of these technologies, such as the Cloud, continue to expand, but new trends are also emerging, such as Edge Computing and 5G, which had its first trials last year. To help you keep up to date, we present the technology trends for this year.

The Technology Trends for 2019

  1. 5G

After years of imagining the moment when downloading a film would take just a few seconds, 2019 has arrived and with it the launch of the 5G network. According to CSS Insights, there will be around 60 million 5G connections by 2020.

This new network standard will not only give us higher internet speeds but will also enable new experiences in augmented reality, virtual reality, connected cars and smart homes, with virtually no communication delay.

To achieve the high radio frequency required for 5G, mobile operators are already preparing by optimising costs through open source and virtualisation. This need will pave the way for the deployment of Edge infrastructures that make it possible to operate multiple transmitters through virtual network software. In this respect, for 2019 Equinix predicts an increase in innovation and investment in building virtual wireless networks.

  1. Artificial Intelligence

The growing presence of AI, both in business and in people's daily lives, will cause the use of the data generated by these platforms to increase exponentially. Unlike first-generation AI infrastructures, which were centralised, in 2019 the trend will be towards distributed artificial intelligence infrastructures which, thanks to their proximity to the source of the data, will make more accurate predictions possible. At the same time, with the rapid evolution of public clouds, companies are beginning to look for solutions so as not to be locked into a single cloud, contributing even further to the decentralisation of AI architecture.

  1. Blockchain

One of the main technology trends for 2019 will be blockchain: according to IDC, investment in this technology is expected to reach 11.7 billion dollars by 2022.

With the increasing number of applications that require high real-time performance and connections to other data sources, such as supply chain traceability or machine-to-machine communications, it is estimated that in 2019 the use of applications based on blockchain will become a virtually essential requirement for companies.

  1. Cloud

More and more companies are using SaaS (Software as a Service), IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and PaaS (Platform as a Service) solutions from several providers, so 2019 is expected to be the year of hybrid cloud and multicloud approaches.

Hybrid cloud refers to the combination of private and public clouds, allowing data and applications to move between both clouds for greater flexibility and more deployment options. Multicloud, in turn, refers to the presence of more than one cloud deployment of the same type (public or private) from different providers.

  1. AI-driven cybersecurity

Another strong trend for 2019 is cybersecurity driven by artificial intelligence. This will make it possible to predict and respond more quickly to cyber attacks and individual threats.

The high degree of machine learning will give machines a greater capacity for decision-making, and they will begin to make changes in order to minimise an organisation's risk of attack.

  1. Edge Computing

Edge Computing emerges as part of the evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT). This trend allows data produced or collected on the IoT network to be processed closer to the source where it is created, instead of having to be sent across long network segments to data centres or cloud computing platforms. This allows a range of sectors, from manufacturing to finance, to benefit from near real-time IoT data analysis. 2019 will therefore be the year in which we see growing adoption and maturity of Edge Computing, which in turn will represent a major step towards a fully connected world.

Over the last few years we have seen a profound change in technology infrastructures, which are the basis for obtaining relevant market insights that help managers make decisions and communicate in complex organisations, and this year will be no different. Find out more about the importance of technology infrastructures and get your business ready for 2019!

Inventory out of control costs more than idle stock

When inventory is not integrated, up to date and visible, companies lose much more than margin - they lose predictability, efficiency and responsiveness.
